Tidbits about Boarding Schools

Do you know how many boarding schools there are in the world? There are approximately 1,500 boarding schools scattered worldwide. More than 1/5 of them are in the United States (from New York to California, Florida, Texas and other smaller states) and 370 schools and growing are responsible for honing the academic skills of more than 42,500 students in the US alone.

The typical boarding school has been in operation for more than a century. However, it is not as banal and stodgy as it seems. Sure, many prestigious boarding schools maintain a recognizable tradition. But should not be confused with being boring or stiff. It is notable to say that each school has a personality of its own.

Being multifaceted is one of the main goals of most college prep boarding schools. A remarkable 10-12% of boarding school students are foreigners from abroad, while 15% are students of color. According to the National Association of Independent Schools, during the survey that was conducted on 2003-2004, this ratio was nearly 20% that year. Even the students of the most hallowed halls are not from old rich families, which was once the usual case.
